Gene expression profiles of mandible reveal features of both calvarial and ulnar bones in the adult rat.

Conclusions There were relatively few differences in the expression of genes responsible for the bone formation process per se in different functional skeletal sites. Differential transcription factor expression suggests that it is the regulation of bone formation and not the mechanism of bone formation itself that differs between the skeletal sites. Clinical Significan The mandible has areas both prone to, and resistant to, resorption whilst skull and limb bone differ in their susceptibilities to osteopenia. This report reveals that the mandible shares some genetic pathways in common with calvaria and others in common with ulna. Study of these pathways could identify novel treatment strategies for bone preservation. \ (Source: Journal of Dentistry)

The Journal of Applied Oral Science welcomes the Co-Editor-in-Chief

This study evaluated the influence of drying techniques at room temperature and microwave oven on the linear dimensional change, compressive strength and detail reproduction in type IV dental stones. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Three type IV dental stone brands were selected; elite Rock, Shera Premium and Durone IV. Two different drying protocols were tested in 4 groups (n=10); G1 – room temperature (25±4ºC) dried for 2 hours; G2 – room temperature dried for 24 hours; G3 – room temperature dried for 7 days and G4 – microwave oven dried at 800 W for 5 minutes and after 2 hours at room temperature. After drying, the samples were assayed for dimensional charges. The sample surface was submitted to the ImageTool 3.0 software for compressive strength in a universal testing machine with a cell load …

Corticotomy and Tissue Engineering for Orthodontists: A Critical History and Commentary

Twenty-first century discoveries in cellular and molecular biology have explained how clinicians in medicine and dentistry can engineer tissue regeneration in a way that makes room for orthodontists. This presumes that they define themselves as dentoalveolar orthopedists and restrict corticotomy procedures to “selective alveolar decortication,” with or without grafting. With a new vision (orthodontic tooth movement, through a healing wound), orthodontists can modulate physiological internal strains—similar to those of distraction osteogenesis in long bones—to define novel and more stable alveolus phenotypes, reducing the need for bicuspid extractions and minimizing orthognathic surgery morbidity. The aim of this treatise, using critical rationalism and analytical commentary, is to …
