Phosphophoryn (PP) (alternatively referred to as dentin phosphoprotein or dentin phosphophoryn), the carboxyl-terminal cleaved product of dentin sialophosphoprotein (DSPP), contains repeat sequences of serine/aspartic acid (there are over 200 tandem copies in humans and approximately 100 copies in mice). Most of the serine residues in serine/aspartic acid-rich repeats (SDrr) are phosphorylated; therefore, PP may be one of the most acidic proteins in the human body.1,2 Functional analyses in genetically altered mouse models mainly elucidated the function of DSPP as an inducer of mineralization in the extracellular matrix. A brief summary of the articles appearing in this issue of .
Recent studies have highlighted the importance of N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor signaling in the neurobiology of major depressive disorder (MDD). In this blinded, placebo-controlled, crossover trial, Nagele et al. (pages 10–18) report that inhaled nitrous oxide, a general anesthetic commonly used in dentistry, improved depressive symptoms 24 hours after treatment in patients with treatment-resistant depression. These proof-of-concept data suggest that, like ketamine, this N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor antagonist may have rapid and marked antidepressant effects. (Source: Biological Psychiatry)

Expression patterns of immune genes in long-term cultured dental stem cells
Conclusions Communally, instabilities of immune genes from our findings suggest that long-term cultured cells may not be feasible for transplantation purposes. Clinical relevance A complete biological characterization covering all major aspects including immune properties should be made as prerequisite criteria prior to the use of long-term cultured stem cells in clinical settings. Diagnosis, PET/CT imaging, and treatment of extranodal non-Hodgkin lymphoma in keratinized gingiva: a case report.
Authors: Aral CA, A?larc? OS, Y?lmaz HH, Ta?l? F, Karaarslan S, Hatipo?lu F, Sanal MS Abstract A 58-year-old patient who smoked and had uncontrolled type 2 diabetes mellitus was referred to our clinic. The patient had a suspicious asymptomatic lesion that was diagnosed as B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL). Immunohistochemistry revealed intense and diffuse expression of CD20, CD10, BCL-6, and Ki-67. A positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) scan showed focal pathological uptake of F-18-fluorodeoxyglucose only in the subcutaneous tissue anterior to the left maxillary sinus. After lesion excision and five courses of chemotherapy, PET/CT scans demonstrated complete resolution of the lesion. Smoking, uncontrolled diabetes mellitus, and periodontal disease might b…
