After reading the recent editorial titled “Oral-Maxillofacial Surgery Residency Training—Practice Pattern Mismatch” in the January issue of the Journal, I was encouraged that this subject is being brought to the forefront at a time when some might believe this is not a pressing issue. Although admittedly I am not certain of the right solution to this problem, looking at it from the academic frontier, the issue of a “mismatch” between the training of the oral-maxillofacial surgeon (OMS) and actual clinical practice is very real, and the frustration of the receding scope of practice of our specialty outside the academic environment is palpable and constantly on my mind.
