To address the focused question \u2018Does PS minimise crestal bone loss compared with non?platform?switched (NPS) implants?\u2019, PubMed\/Medline and Google Scholar databases were explored from 1986 up to and including December 2013 using the following key words in different combinations: \u2018bone loss\u2019, \u2018dental implant\u2019, \u2018diameter\u2019, \u2018mandible\u2019, \u2018maxilla\u2019 and \u2018platform switching\u2019. Letters to the Editor, unpublished data, historical reviews, case reports and articles published in languages other than English were excluded. Fifteen clinical studies were included.
