Research has shown that poor oral health can have a negative impact on seniors’ overall health and well-being, but for many, there are significant barriers to visiting a dentist, finds a new report in the American Journal of Health Behavior .
Association between near occlusal contact areas and mixing ability
This study investigated the relationship between occlusal contact and near?contact areas defined by clenching intensity using electromyograms (EMGs) and mixing ability assessed with colour?changeable chewing gum. Participants comprised 44 dentate adults (24 men, 20 women) with a mean age of 28·2 ± 6·8 years. Silicone material was used to measure the occlusal contact and near?contact areas (the area of each type of tooth, the total area of the first molar and second molar, the second premolar to the second molar and the first premolar to the second molar) defined by clenching intensity at 10% maximum voluntary contraction (MVC). Colour?changeable chewing gum was used to assess mixing ability. A colorimeter was used to measure colour changes, and the calculated colour differenc…

The influence of fixed orthodontic appliances on masticatory and swallowing threshold performances
Summary To test the hypothesis that treatment with orthodontic appliances disturbs masticatory and swallowing performances. Twenty?seven subjects with malocclusions requiring orthodontic treatment were included in this prospective study. The masticatory and swallowing performances were evaluated at five different times: before bracket placement (T0), immediately after archwire placement (T1), 48 h after archwire placement (T2), 30 days after archwire placement (T3) and 3 months after the initial appointment (T4). Masticatory performance was determined by the median particle sizes for the Optocal test food after 15 chewing strokes, and the swallowing thresholds were registered for both the test food and a natural food (peanuts). Pain during mastication was evaluated using a 100?mm vi…

Jaw movements in patients with a history of pain: an exploratory study
Summary The aims were to determine whether individuals with a past history of pain exhibit (i) altered jaw movement (e.g. reduced amplitude, increased jaw movement variability) in comparison with matched asymptomatic controls, and (ii) correlations between psychological measures (e.g. catastrophising) and altered jaw movement variables. Sixteen participants with a history of trigeminal neuropathic pain (TNP) and 15 age? and gender?matched healthy controls had jaw movements recorded during open/close, free gum chewing and chewing at standardised rates. All completed the Pain Catastrophising Scale (PCS), the Pain Self?Efficacy Questionnaire (PSEQ), and the Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scales (DASS). Velocity and amplitude for open/close and chewing, as well as variability, bias and m…
