A Latin American perspective of periodontology
Abstract Periodontal diseases occur worldwide, and Latin American populations are significantly affected by different manifestations of periodontal disease. The interest in periodontics and periodontal therapy first developed in the early 1930s in the southernmost countries of Latin America, and spread, as the years went by, throughout the region. Today, periodontal research is vibrant in Latin America. The aim of this volume of Periodontology 2000 was to present an overview of the periodontal research currently being performed in different countries of Latin America. Dentures don’t get cavities. Dentures don’t get periodontal disease. So why is oral hygiene so important if you wear dentures? Dentures are in contact with food and bacteria and even though the denture does not decay, the bacteria buildup can do damage to both your oral cavity and to your health.

Pacifier-sucking habit duration and frequency on occlusal and myofunctional alterations in preschool children
The objective of this study was to evaluate the association of pacifier-sucking habit with occlusal and oral myofunctional alterations in preschool children. Eighty-four 2- to 5-year-old children participated in the study. Data on duration and frequency of pacifier use were collected from parents or guardians. Occlusal and oral myofunctional characteristics were examined by a dentist and a speech therapist, respectively. Chi-square tests and Poisson regression were used to analyze the data. Studies conducted by the University’s Australian Research Center for Population Oral Health in the School of Dentistry have found that people with tooth loss do not have their quality of life interfered with provided they still have a certain number and type of teeth left. In dentistry terms, these patients are considered to have “shortened dental arches”, enabling them to maintain functional use of many teeth.
