The aim of this experimental work was to evaluate deposition of titanium dioxide (TiO2) microparticles and nanoparticles, which could originate from titanium bioimplants, in the gingiva. Wistar rats were injected intraperitoneally (i.p.) with a suspension of TiO2 particles of different sizes (150, 10, or 5 nm). The rats were killed 12 months post?injection, and the buccal and lingual gingivae were resected and evaluated using light and scanning electron microscopy. Energy?dispersive X?ray spectroscopy (EDS) was used to confirm the presence of titanium in deposits of microparticles and nanoparticles, and the concentration of titanium in tissues was measured using inductively coupled plasma–mass spectrometry (ICP?MS). Histological examination showed that all experimental groups e…

In this study, the viability of human lung epithelial cells, BEAS?2B, was investigated after exposure to this monomer. Exposure to HEMA reduced the viability of the BEAS?2B cells as a result of increased apoptosis, interruption of the cell cycle, and decreased cell proliferation. Depletion of cellular glutathione and increased levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) were seen after exposure of BEAS?2B cells to HEMA. The glutathione synthase inhibitor, L?buthioninesulfoximine (BSO), was used to study whether the reduced viability was caused by glutathione depletion and increased levels of ROS. Similarly to incubation with HEMA, incubation with BSO resulted in glutathione depletion and increased ROS levels, without increasing cell death or inhibiting cell growth. The results indicate…

Conclusion The remineralizing effect of a 5 % NaF varnish is significantly enhanced when associated with TMP. Clinical relevance The reduction in the subsurface lesion area of enamel treated with the TMP-containing varnish implies that cavities would take longer to develop or might not develop at all depending on individual factors, resulting in lower net caries increments at individual and population levels. Dental caries is a common multifactorial disease, resulting from the interaction of biofilm, cariogenic diet and host response over time. Lactotransferrin (LTF) is a main salivary glycoprotein, which modulates the host immune-inflammatory and antibacterial response. Although a genetic component for caries outcome has been identified, little is known over the genetic aspects underlying its susceptibility. Thus, the aim of this study was to investigate the association between LTF polymorphisms and caries susceptibility. Six hundred seventy seven 12-year-old students were selected: 346 with (DMFT ? 1) and 331 without caries experience (DMFT = 0). Also, individuals concentrating higher levels of disease (polarization group, DMFT ? 2, n = 253) were tested against those with DMFT ? 1 (n = …
