Periodontal disease (PD) is a common and important public health problem. The prevalence of periodontitis in the adult USA population is over 47%. In adults aged 65 and older, 64% had either moderate or severe disease (Eke, Dye, Wei, Thornton-Evans, & Genco, 2012). PD may be a risk factor for a number of disorders, some with an increased cardiovascular risk such as metabolic syndrome and diabetes (Kumar, Mishra, Mohanty, & Nayak, 2014; Watanabe & Cho, 2014).
